The 2024 Berlin Open is one of six WTA tour-level warm-up tournaments for Wimbledon, and the entry list has been released.
This tournament was traditionally held on clay before transitioning to grass in 2021. It is part of the WTA 500 series. Russia's Liudmila Samsonova won the inaugural event on the new surface, beating Linda Bencic in the final.
Ons Jabeur would defeat the Swiss in the 2022 championship match through retirement. But it was a veteran who won the 2023 edition. Czech lefty Petra Kvitova defeated Donna Vekic to sign off with potentially her last WTA title.
Kvitova will not defend her crown as she is on maternity leave, but the event is stacked with world-class players. Nine of the Top 10, including the top three, will be in Berlin.
Iga Swiatek confirmed her participation well in the advance. She will be the top seed and is gunning for her maiden WTA grass-court title. Aryna Sabalenka will be the second seed, but she faces stiff competition to keep World No. 2 ranking from Coco Gauff. Both of them will play in this event.
Elena Rybakina has won a title in Germany this year when she defeated Swiatek on her way to the title in Stuttgart. She is the number four seed. Jessica Pegula has not played a lot of tennis in the first half of the season, and she has suffered abuse of injuries, but she will be a busy fixture on the grass.
Marketa Vondrousova was a surprise Grand Slam champion at last year's Wimbledon. she'll be keen to follow up on that success in Berlin. Ons Jabeur and Liudmila Samsonova, meanwhile, will pursue their second titles at the tournament.
Some of the breakout stars of 2024 include Jasmine Paolini and Marta Kostyuk, who are pushing for a Top 10 spot this season. Veterans like Victoria Azarenka and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova are also part of the 32-player singles field. The entry list for the Berlin Open can be seen below.
