Daniil Medvedev is known for often engaging in antics during challenging matches, and he did so again after slipping to a loss at the 2025 Canadian Open.
Although there are still many high-quality players in the men's singles draw in Toronto, Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, and Novak Djokovic's withdrawals meant the event presented a good chance for Medvedev to end his trophy drought.
The 2021 US Open champion and six-time Grand Slam finalist has not won a title since the 2023 Italian Open over two years ago. He had an opportunity to change that statistic on his favored hard courts in Toronto.
Instead, Medvedev slipped to a 7-5, 4-6, 4-6 loss to the defending champion Alexei Popyrin. The outcome could have been different had he not missed 9 of 11 break point chances on the Australian's serve.
Medvedev was gracious immediately afterward, shaking Popyrin's hand and congratulating him on his win. However, what happened next was unprecedented, even by the Russian's standards, and caused shock.
Rather than collecting his bag and walking off the court, as usually happens after matches, Medvedev charged off the court and left it there. The commentators in the video below were astounded by that moment.
After initially being confused, Popyrin smiled at Medvedev's action. A ball boy began putting away the rest of the 29-year-old's items, and presumably gave his bag to him in the locker room.
This moment can be added to Medvedev's list of memorable incidents over the years. Although his antics can be divisive, no one can deny that he is a unique character who conducts himself in a way no one else does.
During a match at the 2024 ATP Finals, Medvedev repeatedly threw his racket into the air and pretended to catch it before letting it hit the ground, seemingly trying to goad the umpire into taking action against him.
In the same contest, Medvedev returned serve with his racket backwards. The crowd in Turin was split between being irritated and amused by the moment, perfectly encapsulating how he divides opinion.
Medvedev is also known for ranting on the court when unhappy about the pace of the court and the balls. During his 2023 Indian Wells Open match against Alexander Zverev, he called the slow court a "freaking disgrace to the sport."
The three-time Australian Open runner-up then said he would take as much time as he wanted during a bathroom break because of the court speed. Despite being unhappy, Medvedev went on to triumph 6-7, 7-6, 7-5.
Medvedev's form dip since the 2024 Australian Open final has been significant. He lost that final against Jannik Sinner despite winning the opening two sets, which also happened to him against Rafael Nadal two years previously in Melbourne.
Recovering from those mental blows is challenging for anyone. That, combined with Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz's superb levels since the start of 2024, makes it tough for Medvedev to win titles.
Despite those struggles, he retains belief in his long-time coach, Gilles Cervara, and hopes they can work through his difficulties together.
