Mirra Andreeva could not believe it when the umpire decided a point should be replayed during her match against Clara Tauson at the 2025 Italian Open.
Andreeva and Tauson battled in a thrilling round of 16 match on Court Pietrangeli. The Dane took the opening set 7-5 before this year's Indian Wells Open and Dubai Championships champion hit back to force a decider.
At that point, the match hung in the balance, and any pivotal decision could have been crucial in determining who prevailed and reached the quarterfinal. That meant emotions ran high when the umpire made a contentious call in the third set.
Serving at 1-1, 15-0, Andreeva looked to have gone 30-up by using a combination of a serve and forehand volley combination. Tauson had no chance of retrieving the 18-year-old's winner regardless of any other factors.
However, the lights on Court Pietrangeli momentarily switched on before Andreeva hit her forehand winner. She did very well not to let that situation distract her and find an accurate shot into Tauson's backhand corner.
But the lights turning on during the point meant the umpire reviewed and consulted with others using a headset to decide whether the point should be replayed or awarded to Andreeva.
Eventually, the umpire announced that the lights switching on before Andreeva's forehand volley winner counted as a hindrance for both players and that the point at 15-0 would be played again.
Andreeva, never one to hide her emotions during matches, immediately marched over to the umpire's chair and questioned the decision. She understandably argued that the point should have been given to her since Tauson had no chance of making the next shot.
The teenager placed the ball along the sideline to emphasize that her shot was in the corner, and Tauson could not have retrieved it even if the lights had not influenced the point in any way.
While attempting to explain her decision and calm Andreeva down, the umpire revealed part of why she opted for a replayed point was that she believed Tauson complained about the lights switching on before her younger opponent hit the forehand volley.
The footage of the incident demonstrates beyond doubt that the umpire was wrong. Tauson said nothing about the situation until after Andreeva hit her shot, meaning it should not have been taken into consideration.
It seemed like the controversial moment might damage Andreeva's chances of winning the match when she lost the next three points to fall 15-40 down and hand Tauson two break points in front of the raucous crowd.
Instead, Andreeva responded superbly with some big hitting and serving to hold serve. The two-time WTA-1000 title winner then dominated the rest of the contest to prevail 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 and set up a quarterfinal on Wednesday with Coco Gauff.
This is not the first heated moment involving Andreeva in 2025. At the Miami Open, she accused Amanda Anisimova of stopping play in the middle of a game to disrupt her, leading to the American posting a video of the blister she was managing afterward.
