Stefanos Tsitsipas's season could be over after he withdrew from another tournament. In recent months, he has dealt with repeated injury problems.
The Greek No. 1 has a chronic back issue that consistently flares up. Tsitsipas retired from his opening round match at the 2025 Wimbledon Championships after the second set because of that injury.
In a press conference at SW19, Tsitsipas emotionally opened up about the problem and questioned how much longer he will keep playing if there is not a noticeable improvement soon.
Tsitsipas has not played an
ATP match since losing to Daniel Altmaier in the second round of the 2025 US Open almost two months ago. He led after three sets, but made some crucial errors to fall in five sets.
The 2021 French Open runner-up's absence from ATP events has not just been caused by his troublesome back. When he removed himself from the 2025 Shanghai Masters entry list, the tournament and ATP confirmed it was caused by a leg injury.
Tsitsipas declared himself fit for the 2025 Six Kings Slam, which was played from October 15th to 18th. Despite being easily beaten by Jannik Sinner, he received $1.5 million just for appearing at the exhibition and playing one match.
That was followed by
his withdrawal from the 2025 Vienna Open. Tsitsipas traveled to the Austrian capital and appeared in promotional activities before withdrawing hours before his scheduled match against Lorenzo Musetti.
The 27-year-old named his repeated lower back injury as the reason for that withdrawal. With no explanation currently provided for his decision not to play in Paris, that problem is the most likely cause.
Tsitsipas is scheduled to play on home soil in Athens for a tournament scheduled from November 2nd to 8th. Novak Djokovic and his family owned the event that was held in Belgrade until last year. It relocated to Athens because of Djokovic's tensions with the Serbian government.
Greece's top-ranked ATP player will undoubtedly be desperate to play the maiden iteration of a tournament played in his home country. Hopefully, he can get fit in time and entertain the spectators.
Nuno Borges replaced Tsitsipas on the
Paris Masters entry list. The Portuguese player recently equaled his best performance at a Masters 1000 event by reaching the fourth round in Shanghai, but lost his opening match of the indoor hard court swing against Daniil Medvedev in Vienna.
Djokovic is also in a race to be fit for the Athens Open
Djokovic's last appearance was also at the Six Kings Slam. The tennis legend retired after the opening set against Taylor Fritz, raising doubts about his schedule for the rest of 2025.
Unsurprisingly,
he withdrew from the 2025 Paris Masters. Djokovic has won the tournament seven times, but did not compete in the final Masters 1000 of the season last year either.
The 24-time Grand Slam champion's brother
provided a worrying update. Although Djokovic will try to be ready, a specific physical problem worsened at the 2025 Shanghai Masters. That also puts his participation in the 2025 ATP Finals into doubt.
