Jannik Sinner's inability to play at the 2025 Miami Open significantly reduced his lead at No. 1, but Jakub Mensik had much better news.
Sinner won last year's Miami Open, overcoming Grigor Dimitrov in the final with a dominant performance. It was one of several highlights from his breakthrough 2024 season, which established him as a global superstar.
However, Sinner also tested positive for the banned substance clostebol at the 2024 Indian Wells Open after accidental contamination without his knowledge from his physiotherapist at the time, leading to a controversial saga.
Eventually, the three-time Grand Slam champion settled his case with the World Anti-Doping Agency and accepted a ban from February 9th until May 4th. His first eligible tournament back will be the 2025 Italian Open.
Sinner lost 1,000 points from his total because he could not defend last year's ranking points. That puts him on 10,330, putting a dent in the formidable lead he had built at the summit of the ATP rankings.
Alexander Zverev remains at No. 2, but his continued poor form prevented him from capitalizing on Sinner's absence. The German lost in the round of 16 in Miami to Arthur Fils and dropped 300 points, taking his total to 7,645 and putting him only 700 points closer to Sinner.
Carlos Alcaraz at No. 3 also missed a chance to close in on his fellow young star. Alcaraz suffered a surprising loss to David Goffin in Miami, leading to his points total falling 190 points to 6,720 ahead of next week's 2025 Monte-Carlo Masters.
Novak Djokovic's run to the final of the Miami Open helped solidify his place in the Top 5 and move closer to Taylor Fritz at No. 4. The 24-time Grand Slam champion is No. 5 with 4,510 points, 780 points behind Fritz's 5,290.
Although reaching the final in Miami was a great achievement, Djokovic could have moved even closer to Fritz had he overcome Jakub Mensik. The 19-year-old produced a stunning performance to defeat him.
Mensik became the latest young player to make a statement by winning a maiden Masters 1000 title after Jack Draper did the same in Indian Wells. Unsurprisingly, he was the biggest mover in this week's rankings, catapulting himself from No. 54 to 24.
While putting undue pressure on Mesnik would be unwise, he undoubtedly has a realistic chance of entering the Top 20 in the coming months. His big serve and groundstrokes can be successful on any surface.
Stefanos Tsitsipas was the biggest mover in this week's Top 10 in the ATP rankings. Despite only getting to the round of 32 in Miami before losing to Sebastian Korda, the Greek moved two places from No. 10 to No. 8.
Daniil Medvedev paid the price for his shocking straight-sets loss to Jaume Munar in the Miami round of 64. He is now outside the Top 10 for the first time since February 2023 after sliding three places from No. 8 to No. 11.
Other notable ATP rankings changes include Alex de Minaur re-entering the Top 10, Arthur Fils moving up three places to No. 15, and Grigor Dimitrov dropping three spots to No. 15.
