Winding down during the off-season is crucial for players, and several
WTA stars are going to the same country.
Aryna Sabalenka probably needed a holiday as much as anyone after being defeated by Elena Rybakina in the showpiece match at the 2025 WTA Finals. She is still waiting for her maiden title at the year-end tournament.
Despite winning the 2025 US Open and finishing as the year-end No. 1, this season was still
something of a missed opportunity for Sabalenka after final losses at the Australian Open, French Open, and the WTA Finals.
In her press conference after being defeated by Rybakina, Sabalenka immediately announced she would be flying to the Maldives afterward and jokingly asked reporters to ask their questions quickly.
"Can we do it quick? I want to go to the Maldives."
A few days later, Sabalenka posted several photos on her Instagram account with her boyfriend, Georgios Frangulis, and thanked the Waldorf Astoria Maldives for making their time in luxury feel special.
"Just us 👩❤️💋👨🏝️♾️ Thank you @waldorfastoriamaldives for taking the best care of us and making paradise feel like home!"
Sabalenka is naturally extroverted and likes sharing her life with fans. They will hope that spending some time away with Frangulis can act as the relaxation she needs to take the next step in 2026 and be dominant.
The Maldives is the most popular destination among WTA players.
Belinda Bencic, who enjoyed an outstanding comeback season, joked about the number of Instagram posts she made from the country.
"Leaving this paradise more than relaxed, recharged and serene. We will definitely come back to @ritzcarltonmaldives. Thank you for making it possible, @maldives.ae. (And don't worry everything comes to an end, even the endless vacation posts😘, you guys made it🤣, so here comes the last 20 picture carousel😌😝)"
Jelena Ostapenko, Marketa Vondrousova, and Katerina Siniakova were among the others who went to the Maldives. Ostapenko endured poor results after winning the 2025 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix and
generated attention by trying to sell already used items.
Naomi Osaka went to the Caribbean alongside her friend
Taylor Townsend. The American released a video of them dancing on a yacht to a combination of Beez in the Trap by Nicki Minaj and What's Up by 4 Non Blondes.
Osaka completed her season slightly earlier than hoped after ending her 2025 Japan Championships campaign before the quarterfinal and withdrawing from the 2025 Japan Open. She had a great North American swing before that, including reaching the 2025 US Open semifinals.
Amanda Anisimova returned to New York, just over two months after reaching the US Open final. The world No. 4 is close to her family in America, and might not have wanted to go far from them after traveling throughout the season.
Yulia Putintseva, who had a mostly terrible 2025 on the court, stayed in Japan for a while before going to Paris. The Kazakhstani is a fiery competitor and can anger opponents. That was shown when
Maria Sakkari said no one liked her during a heated confrontation.
