Rafael Nadal has significantly increased his wealth by selling a considerable percentage of the Rafael Nadal Academy in Mallorca.

The 22-time Grand Slam champion retired from professional tennis after the 2024 Davis Cup Finals in November. Some might have assumed that his wealth would dry up slightly after stepping away from being an ATP player.

However, that has proven not to be the case. Nadal started his tennis academy in 2016, and it has developed into one of the best facilities in the world for aspiring players to work hard and reach their potential.

The former ATP world No. 1 was expected to become more involved at the Academy after retirement. Nadal did what he could during his career, but consistently helping was not easy while competing at the highest level.

It is unclear whether the latest news about the Academy might alter Nadal's plans. Investment group GPF acquired 44.9% of the Academy after the tennis legend accepted their proposal to become involved.

Nadal made about 94 million euros from the sale. Although the 38-year-old is already very wealthy after his career, that is still an incredible and notable amount. Starting the academy has proved lucrative.

Aspemir is the name of Nadal's holding company, and the money from the sale was processed through it. At this point, it is unclear what plans GPF has for the academy or the scale of their involvement.

GPF's offer may have been accepted purely because of the financial support they were willing to provide. Their role in creative decisions surrounding the academy might have been limited. It is hard to know at this stage.

Nadal's decision to sell to GPF could have been influenced by the damage to the academy caused by severe flooding a few months ago. The work needed to restore the academy to its previous level before considering improvements was significant.

While the academy is a massive part of Nadal's life and something he is very proud of, millions of fans worldwide miss watching him play. At an event recently, he reflected on being retired and his career as a whole.

Nadal said Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic, broadly seen as his two biggest rivals, had the most impact on him over the years. They pushed each other to improve mentally, physically, and technically.

The Spaniard mentioned that the physical pushing had consequences for them all. Federer continues to suffer from a knee issue to this day. Nadal had numerous injury problems toward the end of his career, and Djokovic has started to get more injuries.

Nadal also revealed the happy news that he is living without much pain. There had been concerns that years of trying and failing to recover from injuries before eventually retiring might have left him in permanent discomfort.

Juan Martin Del Potro did an emotional interview last year about the constant pain he lives in from his knee. It was heartbreaking to listen to, and tennis fans should be relieved that Nadal is not in that situation.
