Paula Badosa won't compete at the 2025 Madrid Open after an injury prevented her from making it to the tennis courts for her second-round match.
Badosa is a player who has struggled with injuries over the years. In recent times, the Spanish player has been bothered by a chronic back injury, which often stops her progress.
After reaching the WTA World No. 2 position in 2022, it took Badosa over two years to return to the Top 10 again, but it seems that, because of her body, she might need to do all the hard work again.
The injury has now forced Badosa to withdraw from the third consecutive WTA 1000 tournament, which puts her in a bad position compared to her rivals when it comes to collecting valuable ranking points.
But ranking points are likely the last thing that Badosa cares about at the moment. As a Spanish player, she certainly wanted to compete in front of her home crowd, which is also why the withdrawal came at the last minute.
The WTA World No. 9 player, who had a first-round bye in Madrid, wanted to maximize her chances of competing in the Spanish capital, but she just couldn't make it to the court for her second-round match against Veronika Kudermetova, who beat her sister Polina Kudermetova in the first round. Badosa's withdrawal was announced by the tournament organizers on social media.
"Despite her efforts, Paula Badosa is unable to participate in the Madrid Open and has just announced her withdrawal from the tournament. Wishing you a speedy recovery, we hope to see you back on court as soon as possible!"
Although Spanish fans will be sad to see both of their top players (Carlos Alcaraz also withdrew from the tournament) miss the event, the consolation prize could be the fact that Badosa was replaced by another Spanish player in the draw.
Cristina Bucsa, who lost in the qualifying of the tournament, was given a lucky loser spot, which means she will now play against Kudermetova in the second round of the tournament.
Badosa, on the other hand, will continue working hard, hoping to make it at least to Roland Garros. Her next scheduled tournament is the Italian Open in Rome, which starts on May 6th, but the ultimate goal for the Spaniard will be the clay-court Grand Slam.
