In a recent interview,
Iga Swiatek responded to those who wanted her to give
Amanda Anisimova a game in their 2025
Wimbledon final.
Many were expecting an epic battle between Swiatek and Anisimova at SW19. The American defeated Aryna Sabalenka in three sets in their memorable semifinal, which included the
WTA world No. 1
being angry about Anisimova's behavior.
Unfortunately, the final did not live up to expectations. Anisimova could not control her nerves from the start and fell to a 0-6, 0-6 defeat. It was the first time a player did not win a game in a Wimbledon singles final since 1911.
Swiatek ruthlessly took advantage of Anisimova's struggles. She has won more sets 6-0 since 2020 than any other WTA player, making her ideally suited to swiftly overcoming an opponent that is not performing.
Many fans were sympathetic to Anisimova's difficulties in her first Grand Slam final and argued that Swiatek could have given the 24-year-old a game to avoid complete humiliation, since she would have almost certainly prevailed anyway.
In an interview with
the Guardian, Swiatek said she was not thinking about the optics while trying to focus, and only realized how unusual the 6-0 6-0 score in a Grand Slam final was afterward.
"I wasn’t really thinking about how it looks, I was just playing, and I didn’t want to give any points for free. It’s a Wimbledon final, I wanted to win it really bad."
“After, for sure, there were a lot of crazy things happening. I remember all these interviews about the score, journalists asking questions if I should let Amanda win one game or something like that. It was pretty different."
Swiatek feels that the final shows how crucial players' mentalities are in tennis. The Pole pointed out that many focused on Anisimova's anxiety without realizing she was feeling the same way on such a significant stage.
"I can only say that this tournament shows tennis is [such a] mental sport. This part of the game has a huge impact on everything and on the results of each player."
"I’m really happy I handled the pressure well, because after the final, everybody was talking about Amanda being stressed or something, but I was also stressed as hell; playing the final of Wimbledon on Centre Court is a surreal experience."
Iga Swiatek plans to adjust her schedule in 2026
Iga Swiatek has been a consistent critic of the tennis calendar. She believes it is too lengthy and there are too many mandatory tournaments. Not playing enough mandatory events led to Swiatek, Aryna Sabalenka, Coco Gauff, and others
being docked points in 2025.
In an interview with the Guardian, Swiatek revealed that she will probably play two fewer tournaments in 2026, with those skipped events likely to be at venues where she often does not perform well.
"I would like to try missing maybe two tournaments – maybe the ones I feel I haven’t been playing well at anyway – just spending this time on grinding and getting the technique better."
"I think it will help me also play a little bit better under stress, because my body will remember the proper movements and what it learned during this practice time."
