Iga Swiatek chose not to represent Poland at the upcoming Billie Jean King Cup Qualifiers, and she took to social media to explain her decision.
Swiatek has always proudly represented Poland. For example, she won the bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics, wearing the Polish colors. However, there were also times when she couldn't represent her country.
For example, Swiatek has frequently missed the Billie Jean King Cup Finals at the end of the season because of the scheduling clash with the WTA Finals, where she usually plays.
She was supposed to miss the Billie Jean King Cup Finals also last year, but last-minute, Swiatek surprisingly changed her decision, and she represented Poland at the Finals event.
To get to the Billie Jean King Cup Finals this year, Poland will need to play in the Qualifiers like the rest of the nations. The format sees 18 teams divided into six groups of three, with the best from each group advancing o the next round.
Poland is among the seeded nations, and they are also one of the host nations. The fifth-seeded Poland will welcome Ukraine and Switzerland from April 10th to 12th at the Radomskie Centrum Sportu in Radom, Poland.
Poland will play their ties in Group E on the first two days, while the last day will see Switzerland and Ukraine play. However, the home nation will have to try to win without their biggest star, as Swiatek won't compete at the Qualifiers this year.
Swiatek's absence was previously hinted at, after her name didn't appear among the nominated players, but since she changed her mind the last time, there was a chance that the same would happen also this time.
But now, Swiatek confirmed her absence with a statement on social media. The WTA World No. 2 player explained that she made the difficult decision to skip the Billie Jean King Cup Qualifiers this year to focus on her individual career.
"I have made a difficult decision. I know that this is not the information that fans, especially Polish fans, wanted, nevertheless, it is the right decision for me for now. I will not play in the Billie Jean King Cup qualifying tournament, which will be held in Radom."
"I always represent my country with pride. I played everything there was to be played for the country last year. I am extremely proud of the historic team success – the BJKC semifinals and the UC finals. Now it’s time for more balance, focusing on myself and my training. I keep my fingers crossed for the girls and the whole team."
Not having Swiatek in the team will certainly hurt Poland's chances, but even without the Polish No. 1 player, the team can make it to the Finals. The Polish team should be represented by Magdalena Frech, Magda Linette, Maja Chwalinska, and Katarzyna Kawa.
