Carlos Alcaraz faced plenty of criticism for his on-court behavior during his opening-round loss to Cameron Norrie at the 2025 Paris Masters.
Alcaraz came to Paris after winning titles at the Cincinnati Open, the US Open, and the Japan Open in Tokyo. He lost two matches during that run, but both were at exhibition events, one at the Laver Cup and the other at the Six Kings Slam in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
His real-competition winning streak ended in the first round of the Paris Masters when Cameron Norrie beat him 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. It was one of the most shocking losses of Alcaraz's 2025 season.
Although the Spaniard spoke about the new court speed at the Paris Masters ahead of his first match, even saying it should suit him better, he complained about the courts during his loss to Norrie, saying the court was even slower than the clay court at the Monte-Carlo Masters.
"I don’t feel it. Zero! I feel nothing. This is worse than Monte Carlo."
Noted French tennis journalist Benoît Maylin didn't like Alcaraz's comments and attitude during the match. Even though the world No. 1 player didn't take anything away from his opponent after the loss, praising Norrie for his performance, Maylin thought Alcaraz's on-court attitude was far from ideal.
"When you’ve played nine finals in a row and you’ve just beaten [Cameron] Norrie at Wimbledon, you obviously come into this tournament thinking, 'Let’s keep going, I’m untouchable, I’m going to get through my rounds.'"
"I didn’t like his attitude. I didn’t like his body language, getting angry, telling himself he couldn’t do it. You have to be able to win when you’re playing badly, as your illustrious predecessors did. [Rafael] Nadal, [Novak] Djokovic, and [Roger] Federer didn’t always play their best tennis, but they managed to win because they fought with humility."
"Rafa would never have had such an attitude on the court. He needs to be careful not to let a little ego take hold. Everyone says that Sinner and Alcaraz are untouchable, so he hears it too. He’s such a star that he also needs to know how to come back down to earth, go deep into the mine with Norrie, get out the pickaxe and win matches like that."

What's next for Carlos Alcaraz after the Paris Masters shock?

Alcaraz will now want to forget his opening-round loss at the Paris Masters and fully focus on the two remaining events this year. Although he has never enjoyed much success during this part of the season, the 22-year-old player will be one of the favorites to succeed at the upcoming events.
First, he will be one of the eight players competing at the 2025 ATP Finals in Turin. Alcaraz has yet to win a trophy at the year-end championships, and he will be one of the two main favorites, along with Jannik Sinner, to lift the trophy this year.
After that, he will try to lead his country to Davis Cup glory. Alcaraz will be one of the very few Top 10 players competing at the 2025 Davis Cup Finals, which will significantly boost the chances of his country's success.
