Frances Tiafoe split with coaches David Witt and Jordi Arconada
after
abruptly ending his season in October. He detailed the reason behind his decision on Friday.
Tiafoe roped in Witt before the North American hardcourt
swing in 2024. Arconada, on the other hand, had been a part of his team for five
years.
The American benefitted from Witt’s insights immediately as
he reached the semifinals of the US Open and Citi Open, and final of the
Cincinnati Masters that year. Ranked 29 at the time, he rose to World No. 11
under the coach with runs to the quarterfinals of Roland-Garros and the summit
clash in Houston this year.
However, Tiafoe’s graph couldn’t rise at the same pace in the
second half of the season as he exited Wimbledon from second round and the US Open
from third. After back-to-back first round defeats in Japan and Shanghai, he
eventually
parted ways with both Witt and Arconada.
The World No. 30 was on exhibition duty in Charlotte on
Friday, when he revealed what prompted him exactly to move on from Witt, Arconada
and, notably, two more members of his team.
"I mean, I got rid of more than just two guys, but I
definitely wanted a fresh start, you know, I've been doing the same thing for a
very long time. I will be 28 at the top of the year, I wanted to do something.
I want to see... just get a little bit uncomfortable and then see what happens.”
- Frances Tiafoe“And why not? I don't think there's any bad thing that can
come out of that, but as far as it was going forward, I guess you gotta wait to
see who I decide to bring with me on this crazy journey that we call life.”
A day after Tiafoe’s split with Witt and Arconada became
public, he took to Instagram to express his disappointment over the season gone
by and vowed to grind harder for the next one.
“2025 season has come to an end early this year for the kid.
It wasn’t the season I hoped for but lots of lessons learned on and off court. I
want to give a huge S/O [shoutout] to my team. I’ve been with these guys for
several years. We’ve shared some incredible moments that I’ll remember forever.”
- Frances Tiafoe“That being said I’ve decided it’s time for a change. I truly
appreciate the love..energy…passion and brotherhood. It’s been a great ride and
only bigger and better things for all of us ahead. Excited for what’s ahead for
me and ready to put the work in. Thanks for all the love and support thru it
all. The best is yet to come.”
In the Charlotte event, Frances Tiafoe faced World No. 6 Taylor
Fritz for a showdown and came out on top with 4-6, 6-4, 10-8 win. Tiafoe is
next scheduled to take on World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz in a New Jersey event.
