Eva Lys is the latest
WTA player to speak out about the dangers and disgusting abuse female stars have to deal with.
Lys has enjoyed a career-best season. She finished the year as the No. 1 German and sits at No. 40 in the rankings. Her achievements included beating Elena Rybakina during a run to the 2025 China Open quarterfinal.
The German possesses an excellent backhand and is a great athlete. Further improvements, especially with her serve, could make her a contender for a Top 20 finish at the end of 2026.
Unfortunately, Lys's increased popularity and visibility on social media make her a target for bad people. The 23-year-old provided disturbing details of what she has gone through in an interview with
Die Zeit.
Lys said that stalkers had managed to obtain information on several aspects related to her everyday life, which could have put her in significant danger had these people gotten close with the intent of causing severe harm.
"I recently had to deal with stalkers who had obtained the addresses of training facilities, hotels, and even room numbers. They were clearly obsessed with me. This crossed all boundaries."
The talented player then spared no detail when outlining the disgusting abuse and threats she has received on social media, including explicit and violent threats against her and her mother. It is a daily event for Lys.
"I've read everything terrible that can be read about oneself and one's family. It affects me, but I have to learn to deal with it. It's an everyday occurrence. Unfortunately."
After being told by many to ignore the abuse and threats, Lys has grown tired of doing that and thinks she will let those with hatred win by not speaking about their actions without making it known.
"I was always told: Ignore it, ignore it, don't give these people a platform. And I believed that for years. Until I thought: This can't go on. If you don't talk about it, nothing will ever change."
"I don't want to let the hate win. The more we players talk about it, the greater the pressure to act becomes."
Emma Raducanu had a frightening incident with a stalker this season
In her match against Karolina Muchova at the 2025 Dubai Tennis Championships,
Emma Raducanu cried and hid behind the umpire's chair after spotting a man who had stalked her at previous tournaments in the Middle East.
The same man tried to buy tickets for the 2025 Wimbledon Championships, but the Grand Slam's system flagged him. Hopefully, he never goes near Raducanu or any other significant female players in the future.
Raducanu admitted it took her a while to get over the incident and that it made her more aware of the dangers. The 2021 US Open champion was offered more extensive security at some tournaments.
Jessica Pegula spoke about the horrific social media abuse she has received after the 2025 French Open. That included sick people saying they were happy about the American's beloved dog passing away.
