Coco Gauff and Carlos Alcaraz are two of the most significant young athletes on the planet. It has now been revealed that the Spaniard tried and failed to converse with her many years ago.
Gauff became known worldwide after reaching the fourth round of the 2019 Wimbledon Championships as a 15-year-old. That run included a win against her childhood idol, Venus Williams.
Although Alcaraz is one year older than 21-year-old Gauff, he was not as widely known yet. Only hardcore tennis fans were aware of the promising young player who was performing well at junior tournaments.
Gauff and Alcaraz represented their countries in the junior categories, playing Fed Cup and Davis Cup. In an interview at Roland Garros, the American mentioned that she and Alcaraz had won the tournament for their respective countries as young players.
However, Gauff was only made aware of that because Alcaraz messaged her during her run at Wimbledon in 2019, asking if she remembered him and mentioning that they had won the tournaments at the same time.
Unfortunately for the teenage Alcaraz, Gauff did not remember him. Rather than respond to someone she could not recollect, she did nothing and left the four-time Grand Slam champion on seen for years.
"I did well at Wimbledon in 2019 and Alcaraz actually DM'd me saying, 'Hey Coco, do you remember me?' because we apparently won the Junior Fed Cup at the same time, for both our countries, and I didn't remember him, so I didn't respond."
The Silence from Gauff was broken when Alcaraz won his maiden Grand Slam title at the 2022 US Open. She messaged him congratulations, and finds it amusing to look back at the messages because of how long the gaps between responses are.
"Obviously, 4, 5, or 6 years later, he won the US Open. Then I DM'd him congratulations, but if you look at our DMs (laughs), our spread is like, 'Hey, do you remember me?' and me saying 'Congratulations.' I feel bad that I didn't respond."
Gauff not remembering Alcaraz as a junior is even funnier considering what he has gone on to achieve. Now, millions of fans worldwide follow both players because of their superb games and engaging personalities.
The pair seems to have a good relationship now. They were pictured high-fiving before Roland Garros while they both practiced at the venue. Their statuses as two of the sport's biggest stars mean they inevitably cross paths sometimes.
Another funny moment involving Gauff occurred when she forgot to pack her rackets for the opening round at Roland Garros. The 2023 US Open winner only realized it happened after she had walked out onto the court.
The situation was resolved swiftly, with a ball boy handing Gauff rackets that her team members had retrieved. She poked fun at the incident on social media after defeating Olivia Gadecki to reach the second round.
Alcaraz humorously responded to a reporter when asked about Max Purcell's doping case in his pre-tournament press conference in Paris. He said the details of the case and the reporter's question were so confusing that they sounded like Chinese to him.
