Carlos Alcaraz explained his decision to play an exhibition match in Puerto Rico shortly before the start of the 2025 Indian Wells Open.
There aren't many tennis players who would be criticized for choosing to play an exhibition. There are some fitting spots in the calendar when playing an exhibition makes sense, and it's also a great way for tennis players to earn some extra money.
Exhibitions guarantee fixed appearance fees, unlike tournaments where players receive prize money based on which round they reach. Of course, there are deals with the tournament organizers that also guarantee players some appearance fees at regular events, but exhibitions are usually much more interesting for players, also because they don't have to take those matches so seriously.
But even despite all of that, Alcaraz finds himself in the midst of criticism when it comes to exhibitions. He has been one of the most vocal voices when it comes to criticizing the tennis calendar, but he's also one of the players who play the most exhibitions.
In fact, he played the most exhibitions out of all players last year, which is something he was heavily criticized for in light of his comments about the challenging calendar. Had the 21-year-old Spaniard not complained, people probably wouldn't focus so much on the fact that he played so many exhibitions.
Unfortunately for him, probably every time he signs up for an exhibition, Alcaraz will need to face some questions, and the same also happened ahead of his upcoming exhibition match.
The Spaniard will play in Puerto Rico against Frances Tiafoe. It's an exhibition held on March 2nd, 2025, shortly before the start of the 2025 Indian Wells Open, which starts on March 5th.
Before the exhibition, Alcaraz talked to El Nuevo Dia, and he also explained his decision to play the exhibition. The four-time Grand Slam champion stated that he thinks it's in a perfect spot prior to the Indian Wells Open and that it can serve as preparation for him.
"In the end, I think it's a good time because after the match, we have to go to Indians Wells, which is a very important tournament, and I think this type of match helps you a lot to get in shape and in a good rhythm for the next tournament. There is no better show that we can put on than playing at full speed, taking it seriously to be able to get into rhythm and improve."
Alcaraz and Tiafoe are both highly competitive individuals, so it can certainly be a high-quality match. The Spaniard expects it to be.
"I think it's going to be a very nice match. Tiafoe is always a pleasure to play with. There are always good matches and good moments, and I think it's going to be a great day. There are going to be good moments, good points, and good rallies."
Alcaraz wasn't the only one to defend his decision to play the exhibition. His coach, Juan Carlos Ferrero, also spoke about it, which just shows how much attention Alcaraz's exhibitions get.
