The 2025 Queen's Club Championships was hit by a massive wave of withdrawals after Matteo Berrettini, Lorenzo Musetti, and Tommy Paul all pulled out of the tournament.
The tennis calendar is becoming more and more challenging every year, something many tennis players actually complain about. There have been numerous attempts from players to start the conversation about making the calendar shorter, but if words don't help, the lack of star power at tournaments might do so.
This year's clay-court part of the season seemingly left plenty of players injured or very tired. Many withdrew from their planned grass-court events, and even Carlos Alcaraz's participation at the Queen's Club is in doubt.
One of the two ATP 500 events on grass runs from June 16th until June 22nd, and four days before the start of the event, the tournament organizers were hit by terrible news, as a two-time champion, defending champion, and defending runner-up all withdrew from the event.
Matteo Berrettini triumphed at the Queen's Club in 2021 and 2022, but he won't add another win in 2025, after he was forced to pull out of the tournament. For the Italian, this withdrawal won't cause so much trouble in the rankings, but that can't be said about the defending champion, Tommy Paul.
Paul won the ATP 500 tournament in London last year, and thanks to those 500 points, he is part of the Top 10 at the moment. However, this withdrawal means that Paul will leave the Top 10 after the Queen's Club Championships this year.
But he isn't the only Top 10 player who withdrew from the tournament. Last year's finalist, Lorenzo Musetti, announced his withdrawal as well. The Italian last played at the Roland Garros, where he reached the semi-finals, retiring against Carlos Alcaraz.
Although plenty of fans will be disappointed by these three players missing the ATP 500 tournament in London, there will be at least three people who will have a reason to be happy.
Alexander Bublik, Camilo Ugo Carabelli, and Jenson Brooksby are all three alternates who have replaced Berrettini, Paul, and Musetti in the main draw. Before these three announced their withdrawals, Sebastian Korda and Nick Kyrgios also withdrew from the 2025 Queen's Club Championships.
The tournament organizers will hope to avoid more withdrawals, even though the field is still every strong even after the change of plans for these players.
Carlos Alcaraz leads the entry list, joined by Jack Draper, Taylor Fritz, and Holger Rune. The likes of Ben Shelton and Frances Tiafoe are also crowd magnets who will compete in London.
Berrettini, Musetti, and Paul, on the other hand, won't play any tournaments before the Wimbledon Championships this year.
