Carlos Alcaraz has been closely following the progress of his rival Jannik Sinner throughout the 2025 Roland Garros.
Alcaraz is one of the tennis players who loves tennis. Although it might seem that all tennis players love the sport, it's not necessarily the case. The 22-year-old Spaniard, however, really enjoys tennis, both when he's on the court and when someone else competes.
Therefore, it's not a surprise that he has been closely following Jannik Sinner's results at this year's Roland Garros. The Italian has been incredibly dominant so far, beating all of his opponents with ease.
To reach the quarter-finals, Sinner bested Arthur Rinderknech 6-4, 6-3, 7-5, Richard Gasquet 6-3, 6-0, 6-4, Jiri Lehecka 6-0, 6-1, 6-2, and also Andrey Rublev 6-1, 6-3, 6-4. The ATP World No. 1 player has yet to lose a set, and since the second round, he has also yet to lose more than eight games in a match.
Alcaraz, on the other hand, has been much less convincing in the early rounds. After beating left-handed Giulio Zeppieri in straight sets, the Spaniard lost a set against Fabian Marozsan, Damir Dzumhur, and also Ben Shelton.
However, in his quarter-final match, the defending champion destroyed Tommy Paul, beating the American 6-0, 6-1, 6-4. Although Paul was not in his best condition, Alcaraz's win was impressive and certainly sent a message to his rivals.
After the match, the four-time Grand Slam champion admitted that his win was inspired by his rival Sinner. Alcaraz has been watching Sinner's matches, and seeing his rival win so dominantly motivated the 22-year-old.
"Obviously, I love to watch matches on my days off. And yeah, let’s say he’s inspiring me in some ways just to give my 100% every match. And I see how important it is just to play at such a great level in the whole match, just have more time to recover after the match."
Alcaraz sees clear benefits of winning matches quickly and efficiently. By getting off the court quicker, he can then use more time to recover, which might help him in the following rounds.
"I’m trying to do it as well. Trying to be really focused during the whole match. And see the importance of having more time to recover for the next matches. For me, it’s great to have tennis. I love Grand Slams because, on my days off, I have great matches to watch and get inspired from watching them."
Since he was in the part of the draw that started the play at Roland Garros, Alcaraz will now have a chance to catch up to Sinner when it comes to recovery. After playing his quarter-final match on Tuesday, the Spaniard won't be in action until Friday, when the men's singles semi-finals are played.
That means instead of one day off, Alcaraz will have two days off, giving him time to recover after losing three more sets than his rival so far.
