Carlos Alcaraz might be able to beat
Novak Djokovic's record of 24 Grand Slam titles, according to former Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli.
Alcaraz is still only 22 years old, but he is already a four-time Grand Slam champion. For comparison, at this stage of his tennis career, and even one year later, Djokovic only had one major to his name.
The young Spaniard is also not afraid to talk about the Grand Slam record. Although he has great respect for the Serbian legend, Alcaraz stated multiple times that he aspires to become the best in history.
At the same time, in his Netflix documentary, 'My Way,' Alcaraz explained that he doesn't want to focus on his tennis career too much. Instead, the Spaniard wants to make sure to have fun along the way.
Regardless of how he approaches his career, it's clear that Alcaraz is the man who might be able to challenge Djokovic's Grand Slam record, if not for his qualities, then because of the fact how quickly he got to four major titles.
Former Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli spoke about the defending
Roland Garros champion for Prime Video in France. According to Bartoli, if there is someone to challenge Djokovic's record, it's clearly Alcaraz.
"He has won so much, so young, that we have to compare him to [Rafael] Nadal, and say that if there is one who is perhaps capable of going after [Novak] Djokovic’s monumental Grand Slam record, it is Alcaraz."
Bartoli also spoke about Alcaraz's previous statements. Despite stating multiple times that he wants to become the best in history, he has recently avoided similar statements.
"I think that humanly, it is so difficult to bear in terms of pressure, that he said to himself: 'leave me alone, I want to play tennis, the records, we will see later, I want to enjoy my victories, celebrate my titles, enjoy myself with my friends and leave me alone, it’s my life.'"
However, despite trying to enjoy his life outside of the tennis courts as well, Alcaraz has enjoyed great success even last year. He won back-to-back majors at Roland Garros and Wimbledon, which, according to Bartoli, proves his qualities.
"That did not prevent him from doing the Roland-Garros Wimbledon double in 2024. And he is by far the favourite here."
According to Bartoli, Alcaraz is the favorite to win at Roland Garros as well, even though he lost a set against Damir Dzumhur in the third round. In the fourth round of the tournament, the Spaniard will take on Ben Shelton.
