The
draw was made for the last tournament of the
WTA season, as the eight best players will meet at the 2025
WTA Finals.
For the second year running, the WTA Finals will be held at the King Saud University Indoor Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. It will be the 54th edition of the WTA Finals, and this year, the eight best women will compete from November 1st until November 8th.
Coco Gauff and
Iga Swiatek are the two former champions of the event who will also compete this year. Gauff is the defending champion, while Swiatek won the trophy in 2023. This year, both were drawn into different groups.
The year-end championships always give the organizers an option to honor legends of the sport by naming the two groups after them. That practice was last used in 2022, as groups were named differently in 2023 and 2024. This year, the groups will be named after legends of the sport again. The two groups will bear the names of Steffi Graf and Serena Williams.
Group Steffi Graf
Group Steffi Graf will be the one with the world No. 1 player,
Aryna Sabalenka.
Sabalenka was the first player to qualify for the WTA Finals this year. Naturally, she couldn't draw world No. 2 Iga Swiatek in her group, as players are drawn by ranking; first- and second-seeded players can't be in the same group, and third- and fourth-seeded players avoid each other as well.
From the second seeding group, Coco Gauff was drawn into Group Steffi Graf, which means fans in Riyadh will have a chance to witness the match between the current world No. 1 and the defending champion.
Two Americans will play in each group. The second American who was drawn into this group is
Jessica Pegula, who is Gauff's former doubles partner, so it will be a special meeting for the two.
Jasmine Paolini is the lowest-ranked player to qualify for the WTA Finals, and she is the fourth and final member of Group Steffi Graf.
Group Serena Williams
World No. 2 Iga Swiatek will lead Group Serena Williams, named after the legendary 23-time Grand Slam champion. The group in which Swiatek will be the highest-ranked player will see her playing against all the big hitters.
Amanda Anisimova will try to prove that her success this year was no fluke, but the opposition in her group will be difficult. Joining her will be
Elena Rybakina, who played incredible tennis in the closing stages of the season, as she won six matches in a row to qualify for the tournament.
The lowest-ranked player in this group is
Madison Keys. She more or less secured her qualification at the event thanks to winning the Australian Open this year. However, she missed the entire Asian swing, so it's possible Keys might be replaced by an alternate in Riyadh.
Mirra Andreeva and Ekaterina Alexandrova are the two alternates who will be available to jump into action if one or more of the players withdraw from the tournament.
