The 2025 Merida Open will be the tournament's third edition in Mexico. However, it has made a positive impression, and this year's entry list is superb.
Both previous iterations of the Merida Open were WTA 250 tournaments. Last year, it was played during the final week of regulation events before the WTA Finals in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia was played.
Although the 2024 Merida tournament did not attract many well-known players, the attendance figures were impressive. This continues a history of Mexican fans supporting women's tournaments, as seen at the Guadalajara Open.
Last year's strong ticket sales were probably the most significant reason for the tournament being upgraded to a WTA 500 event. That means this year's entry list has been transformed compared to 2024 and contains many top players.
The entry list includes recent Australian Open semifinalist Paula Badosa. Her excellent run in Melbourne included defeating Coco Gauff in the quarterfinal before Aryna Sabalenka was too strong in the next round.
That was Badosa's first Grand Slam semifinal. When fit and healthy, the Spaniard is one of the world's most formidable and complete WTA players. Her level in Melbourne was a continuation of the good results she achieved in the closing months of 2024.
Hopefully, Badosa can avoid the injuries that have plagued her. Fans in Merida will undoubtedly enjoy watching her blistering brand of powerful serving and groundstrokes.
Emma Navarro is the other Top 10 player on the entry list. Unlike Badosa, the American is one of the most understated and relaxed people in the women's game. However, she is also one of the fittest players and biggest fighters in the game.
That was shown when Navarro won four consecutive matches at the Australian Open in the deciding set, including lengthy and grueling battles against Peyton Stearns and Daria Kasatkina. Iga Swiatek beat her in the quarterfinal, a contest that included a huge umpiring mistake.
Bianca Andreescu is the only former Grand Slam champion on the entry list. However, the 2019 US Open winner's participation at the Merida Open is not guaranteed because of her ongoing back injury.
Andreescu has not played a match yet this season because of that problem. There is no current timeline for her recovery, but hopefully, the 24-year-old's injury ordeal does not last much longer.
Olympic silver medalist Donna Vekic's presence will be another reason to buy tickets. The Croatian has made several impressive improvements in the last 12 months and will be among the favorites for the title in Merida.
The Merida Open could be a great opportunity for Maria Sakkari to have a deep run. She only recently returned from a severe shoulder injury that required surgery but has fond memories from Mexico of winning her sole WTA 1000 title at the Guadalajara Open.
Marta Kostyuk, Beatriz Haddad Maia, Lulu Sun, Rebecca Sramkova, Marie Bouzkova, and Jessica Bouzas Maneiro are among the other players on the entry list for this year's Merida Open.
