The 2025 Guangzhou Open, which is scheduled from October 20th to 26th, has an entry list containing many good players.
Two-time Grand Slam champion and local hero Li Na won the tournament's first iteration in 2004. She overcame Martina Sucha in straight sets to delight the home fans and secure one of many titles during her illustrious career.
Shuai Zhang is the only player to win the event twice, meaning there are many former champions. Sofia Kenin, Jelena Jankovic, and Vera Zvonareva have all reigned supreme at the Guangzhou Open.
Olga Danilovic won last year's title. The Serbian idolizes Novak Djokovic, who Bjorn Borg rates as the best player in tennis history, and some of her baseline hitting during that run felt reminiscent of her legendary compatriot.
It was Danilovic's maiden WTA hard-court title and remains her only crown on the surface. However, she will not defend her title unless the 24-year-old receives a wild card between now and the tournament's start because she is not on the entry list.
Olympic Silver Medalist Donna Vekic's efforts to salvage something positive from 2025 are set to include playing at the Guangzhou Open. She has endured a very challenging time during the past few months.
Vekic had a career-best 2024, including winning that silver medal at the Paris Olympics and narrowly missing out on the Wimbledon final after a thrilling battle against Jasmine Paolini. Despite a late dip in form, she finished the year in the Top 20.
The Croatian has tumbled down the rankings since and sits well outside the Top 50. She last won two matches at a tournament all the way back at the 2025 Madrid Open in April.
Alexandra Eala's fortunes in 2025 contrast sharply with Vekic's. The Filipina was virtually unknown until her stunning semifinal run at the 2025 Miami Open, which included a win against Iga Swiatek.
20-year-old Eala has built on that success by finishing as the 2025 Eastbourne Open runner-up and picking up other victories. She receives outstanding support from her countrymen and women in events worldwide.
Katerina Siniakova often plays her best tennis, at least in singles, at Chinese tournaments. Four of the Czech's ten finals and two of her five titles have been in the country, including her most recent success at the 2023 Jiangxi Open.
Putintseva's 2025 is quite similar to Vekic's. She had the best season of her career in 2024, winning the Birmingham Classic and making quarterfinals in Miami and Madrid, but she also caused controversy with her treatment of a ball kid at the 2024 US Open.
The Kazakhstani's results have been significantly worse this season. She is a divisive character, a reality perfectly demonstrated when Maria Sakkari said no one liked her after being infuriated by the 30-year-old's actions in their 2025 Bad Homburg Open match.
Coco Gauff's former doubles partner, Caty McNally, Alycia Parks, Tatjana Maria, Magdalena Frech, and Jessica Bouzas Maneiro are among the other players on this year's Guangzhou Open entry list.
