The 2025 Argentina Open in Buenos Aires will run from February 10th to 16th, and there is an outstanding entry list for the clay-court tournament.
Federico Diaz Acosta surprisingly won last year's tournament. He defeated the huge-serving Nicolas Jarry in straight sets to claim the title after an excellent returning performance in front of his home fans in Buenos Aires.
The 2023 edition was won by Carlos Alcaraz, who will play Novak Djokovic in his next match at the Australian Open. Alcaraz's 2024 title defense ended prematurely because of an injury, making Diaz Acosta's run to the title easier.
Unfortunately for the tournament organizers and fans, Alcaraz will not participate this year and plans to compete at the Rotterdam Open instead. However, several other top players are on the entry list to entertain spectators.
Alexander Zverev will be the No. 1 seed and highest-ranked player in the draw if he does not withdraw from the Argentina Open. The German's participation at the tournament in Buenos Aires was confirmed last year.
That decision was somewhat surprising, considering that playing at hard court tournaments in Europe or the Middle East, such as Doha or Dubai, might seem like better preparation for Zverev ahead of the Indian Wells Open and Miami Open in March.
It seems likely that Alcaraz is not playing in Buenos Aires or at the subsequent tournament in Rio for that reason. Repeatedly switching from hard to clay courts also carries an injury risk, as the Spaniard found out at last year's Argentina Open.
However, Zverev might want to experience playing in South America in February at least once before he retires. The fans are known for being passionate and creating a unique atmosphere that has been praised by several players.
Teenage prodigy Joao Fonseca also signed up for the Argentina Open. He generated headlines by pulling off a stunning victory against Andrey Rublev in the opening round of the Australia Open after a performance of extraordinary quality.
That was the 18-year-old's 14th consecutive victory after securing titles at the Next Gen Finals, the Canberra Challenger, and winning three matches to qualify for the Australian Open main draw. His run ended after losing in five sets to Lorenzo Sonego in the second round.
Fonseca grew up playing on clay, which means he could be even more dangerous in Buenos Aires than at the Australian Open. He is undoubtedly a special talent who could achieve great things in the future.
Holger Rune is another name on the entry list. After a challenging 2024 season that included more coaching chaos, the Dane fought admirably to the fourth round of the Australian Open, winning some close battles and showing his mental strength.
Lorenzo Musetti also decided to enter the Argentina Open. The Italian was known for preferring clay courts in the early stages of his career, but his run to last year's Wimbledon semifinal shows he can now compete on any surface.
Jarry, last year's runner-up, Sebastian Baez, Tomas Martin Etcheverry, and Luciano Darderi are among the other players on the 2025 Argentina Open entry list.
