Yesterday, Alexander Zverev defeated Stan Wawrinka, and it seemed that the German is back to his best tennis.
After the match, the 25-year-old marked his performance as the best since his injury, and he wanted to continue in a similar style also against Marc-Andrea Huesler. But Zverev couldn't find his rhythm, and eventually, he was outplayed by the Swiss player.
The second day of the 2023 Davis Cup Qualifiers tie between Germany and Switzerland started with a doubles match. Andreas Mies and Tim Puetz managed to come back against Dominic Stricker and Stan Wawrinka, to win the match 6-7(3), 6-3, 6-4 and give a match point to Germany.
As Germans led 2-1, Zverev had a chance to use this match point, but he couldn't do so. In the first set, Huesler proved to be the better player on number of occasions. Thanks to a double fault from Zverev, he broke already his second service game and added one more break to comfortably win the first set 6-2.
The 2020 US Open finalist started well in the second set, leading 2-0 early on. However, he soon lost his lead and the second set had to be decided in a tie-break. Huesler won the tie-break 7-4 to win the match in an hour and 40 minutes and level the score of the tie.
In the last match, Daniel Altmaier will play against Stan Wawrinka as winner will advance to the 2023 Davis Cup Finals.
