Zverev Shockingly Picked As Australian Open Favourite By Former US Open Doubles Champion

Former US Open doubles champion Coco Vandeweghe picked Alexander Zverev as the 2024 Australian Open favourite.

The former WTA player was part of the Tennis Channel panel discussing the upcoming Grand Slam. Asked by the host about the favorites at the event, Coco avoided the likes of Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic, and took dark horse Zverev.

While the pick might seem silly at first glance, there are some reasons why it kind of makes sense. The courts Down Under play pretty fast, and that's certainly something that Zverev can use to his advantage.

His serve is one of the best when it's really clicking, and if it clicks for two weeks, then, he could win it. He's one of those players who can cover the court really well due to his dimensions, and if he limits the mistakes from the baseline, he could be a really tough player to beat.

For most people, though, Novak Djokovic seems to be that favourite. It makes sense because he's been so dominant at the event for such a long time.

But there is the wrist issue. Despite Djokovic playing it down and Ivanisevic playing it down, it impacted him against de Minaur, and if it keeps bothering him, he'll be limited.

"There is always going to be a question mark of how Novak will recover but I don't think he's going to be a favourite in my book."

Vandeweghe on Djokovic's chances

That's a fair point, but ultimately it's so tough to predict. So many things could go wrong and good for any player in the draw and several are capable of winning it. Djokovic, Alcaraz, Zverev, Daniil Medvedev, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Jannik Sinner are all capable.

Who gets it done remains to be seen though, but according to Vandeweghe, it can be the German player.

"My favourite going in there is going to be Zverev, I'm calling dark horse Zverev."
