Nadal 'Sad' After Not Using Three Match Points In Close Brisbane Loss

Rafael Nadal's comeback event is over as he was beaten in the quarter-final of the 2024 Brisbane International, which left many quite sad as he was inches away from winning.

Nadal made his comeback to tennis in Brisbane this week, and it was a pretty decent start for the Spaniard as he played three matches and won two. The first one was an impressive showing against Dominic Thiem, which was followed by another solid win.

Beating Jason Kubler as easily as he did certainly created headlines, but things were expected to be a bit harder against Jordan Thompson and they certainly were. He was down a break in the first set but rallied to win it.

The second set offered match points, but he wasted three of them in total to lose it in the tie-break. Ultimately, he ran out of steam in the final set, admitting fatigue after the match and general disappointment with being unable to close the match.

Well, tired, of course. Sad in this moment because I had plenty of opportunities. But I think he played a good match. For me, even that was not the best match, I had a lot of opportunities to win it, so... That's it, no?

Thompson did play a good match, especially as it went on, and he grew more comfortable on the court. Matches like these are needed for Nadal to get where he needs to be he talked about it after the match. It's normal, and he accepts it.

Need to accept all these kind of stuff. After a year, that's normal that things happens. As I say every day: every day is a different story, and things are difficult after such a long time. Today the opponent play well. Made me play one more ball. I didn't play bad, but I was just one ball away.
