Alexander Zverev and Daniil Medvedev are the first two players who were announced for the 2022 Diriyah Tennis Cup, which will take place from December 8th to 10th in Saudi Arabia.
The Diriyah Tennis Cup will be a special exhibition event held during the off-season this year. The event will be played in a special arena at the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Diriyah.
Players will be motivated by $3 million in prize money, which will be split among 12 players who will compete in Saudi Arabia. Back in 2019, Daniil Medvedev defeated Fabio Fognini in the final of an event in Diriyah, and he will also play in 2022.
Moreover, he will be joined by Alexander Zverev, who withdrew from all events until the end of this season but will try to start his preparation for the next season on courts in Saudi Arabia.
Both are excited about competing in Saudi Arabia. For Zverev, it will be his first appearance on the tennis courts in a long time, which is why he is looking forward to competing at the event.
"I’m happy that I’ll finally be back on the court after my injury. It’s even nicer that I can make my comeback before the official start of the 2023 season. I think the Diriyah Tennis Cup offers a very good opportunity for it and I’m looking forward to being in Saudi Arabia for the first time.
The 2019 Diriyah Tennis Cup champion, Medvedev, is also looking forward to competing in Saudi Arabia. As a former champion of the event, he has only good memories of Saudi Arabia.
"Just a quick message to say how happy I am to come back to Diriyah. I still remember my first time there, coming this time to defend the title. It's been really great three years ago, so I'm really looking forward to being there again."
