Some tennis fans see the sport much differently than the athletes, and a recent interaction between one of them and Stan Wawrinka was a prime example of that.
Despite being already past his prime, the three-time Grand Slam champion is still battling it out at ATP events, and every now and then, he turns the clock and proves his undeniable qualities once again.
Recently, Wawrinka has been playing quite well when he helped his country beat Germany at the Davis Cup Qualifiers, winning the deciding singles match against Daniel Altmaier.
After the successful Davis Cup appearance, the Swiss player moved to the Netherlands for the 2023 Rotterdam Open, where he started thanks to a protected ranking, which qualified him directly for the main draw.
In the first two rounds, Wawrinka was quite dominant. First, he defeated Alexander Bublik in two sets, 7-6(5), 6-4, and then, he outplayed fellow veteran Richard Gasquet in just an hour and 17 minutes, beating him 6-3, 6-3.
In-form Wawrinka awaited the winner of the match between the first-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas and Jannik Sinner in the quarter-finals. The young Italian stunned the Greek in the 2nd round match to set up a clash with the former ATP World No. 3 player.
One of the fans thought that Sinner's performances in recent weeks have been so impressive that Wawrinka should not even compete against him to instead save energy for his next tournament.
"Wawrinka should just default loss and save his energy for next tourney lol. He has no chance."
The Swiss player stumbled across this post on social media, and obviously, like many other users, Wawrinka found this statement quite disrespectful and unreasonable.
He provided a very funny response to the user, along with a winky emoji, saying that he would at least get a free lesson from the player nearly two decades younger than him.
"I will get a lesson for free at least."
