Andrey Rublev admitted weeks ago that he needs to work on his temper, but in his most recent match at the 2024 Halle Open, he couldn't control it again.
The Russian player plays tennis with a lot of passion, and when things don't go his way, that passion turns into anger. A lot of anger. Rublev has built a reputation for being a very emotional player, especially when things don't go his way.
Being emotional is nothing new in tennis, but it often takes an extreme turn in Rublev's case. He's known to bloody himself by hitting himself with his racket, for example. That's nothing new, either, as his compatriot Mikhail Youzhny did it first, but it's still not a great look.
He once screamed in a line umpire's face at the Dubai Championships, which resulted in a disqualification; after that, the Russian admitted that he needed to do better.
He's not been doing that much better in the weeks after that because he's had a few outbursts already after that, and the most recent one happened at the Halle Open.
Rublev played against Marcos Giron in the opening round and lost in two sets. After missing a forehand to lose the match, the Russian once again let out his frustration, screaming to himself and throwing the racket onto the court.
It's nothing new when it comes to Rublev. Still, it's a worrying trend because the Russian was quite open about recognizing that he needs to work on it, yet he's not really been able to do so, even after the incident in Dubai, which was out of line in many ways.
He plays with a lot of passion, and obviously, losses bother him, but finding a way to control his emotions better is a must because sooner or later, something might go really wrong.
