Roger Federer is not yet ready to compete on the court, but he spent his time away from tennis visiting Malawi once again for his eponymous foundation.
Federer is committed to improving the lives of children in the landlocked country in southeast Africa and has traveled to the country multiple times in the past.
Recently, he flew to the country once again to carry out philanthropic work geared towards education and children's welfare. In a video shared on Instagram, the 20-time Grand Slam champion is driven across the country to meet some of these young students in the most remote areas.
Federer actively participates in various charitable causes, helping children in Africa through the Roger Federer Foundation, which will celebrate its 20th anniversary next year. One reason he does that is his personal connection with the continent. His mother, Lynette, was born in South Africa.
Additionally, Federer wants to eradicate some of the global issues holding many families back, such as poverty and lack of education. By establishing schools and empowering the local communities, the Swiss tennis icon is leaving an imprint beyond the tennis ecosystem.
"I really enjoyed playing with the children and learning through play. I've been doing for years with my own children so I'm a bit of an expert. We had a great time. A lovely time."
Federer interacted with the young children, excited to meet him and the teachers. He shared some life lessons that have carried him to the top of the tennis mountain. He also learned of people's hardships and stated that he would bring the memories with him back to Switzerland.
"What I wanna do is help. I want to give the kids in Malawi a chance because I do believe that the potential is incredibly big. This is why I'm here. To see for myself so I can tell the story when I come back to Switzerland."
