It was an emotional night for Novak Djokovic in Melbourne, and he was not afraid to show it after a historic triumph at the 2023 Australian Open.
The Serbian's return to Melbourne, Australia was really emotional, especially after he wasn't able to compete in the country in 2022. Because of that, the 2023 Australian Open was special for him.
As a result of not being able to play multiple tournaments in 2022, Djokovic entered the draw as the fourth seed, behind Rafael Nadal, Casper Ruud, and Stefanos Tsitsipas, after the world no. 1 Carlos Alcaraz withdrew from the tournament.
But for Djokovic, the number next to his name didn't matter, as he cruised through the draw effortlessly, when only Enzo Couacaud was able to take the set off the Serbian.
Thanks to beating Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final, the 35-year-old equaled Rafael Nadal's record of 22 Grand Slam titles. Moreover, he added his 10th Australian Open title and also surpassed the Spaniard in the number of titles won on the ATP Tour, as his 10th in Melbourne Park is also his 93rd title overall.
Following his win, Djokovic celebrated with his team as he also lay on the floor while crying, showing how much the triumph meant to him. A few seconds later, he returned to his bench, and put his head into a towel, as he continued showing emotions.
The Serbian's next few weeks will be definitely full of a lot of pride, reflection, and celebration. He will now return to his native Serbia, where he will most probably celebrate with local fans, as he's undoubtedly the country's hero.
But the journey doesn't end here for Djokovic. By winning the tournament he proved that he's still capable of winning on the major stage, and with the 2023 season ahead, he will want to win even more majors.
