Stefanos Tsitsipas had a rough start against Jordan Thompson, but he would rally to win the match in four sets and book a spot in the third round of the 2024 Australian Open.
The Australian is a very solid tennis player who can sometimes produce an incredible level of play. He was playing really well leading up to this event, which was highlighted by his comeback win over Rafael Nadal in Brisbane.
He's also beaten Stefanos Tsisipas in the past, making him a tricky matchup for the Greek. It would prove so again because he took the opening set behind a pretty solid display of tennis.
He didn't face a single break point in the set but had six break points on the serve of Tsitsipas and used one for the 6-4 finish. The second set was also quite interesting because Thompson played it really well.
He didn't allow a single break point once again as we saw a tiebreak, but Tsitsipas proved slightly better this time around, pulling it out 8-6. There was a bit of luck there, but it was the crucial moment in the match.
Especially since the third set was pretty bad from Thompson. The loss of the second set clearly affected him, as his level was below the match's average in the third set, which he lost 6-2.
The final set would be a bit better as his game stabilized, and he didn't get broken early. He would get broken in the fifth game of the set as Tsitsipas once again established control and outplayed Thompson, who never found the level he had in the first or second set.
The Greek then momentarily lost his lead but prevailed to win. It was an unfortunate ending for Thompson but a great win for Tsitsipas, who finally reminded everybody how good he could be. The final score was 4-6, 7-6(6), 6-2, 7-6(4).
