Thiem Stunned By Qualifier Ranked No. 240 In Opening Round Of Munich Open

Dominic Thiem produced a disappointing performance once more by losing to yet another player who is ranked outside of the Top 200 at the 2024 Munich Open.

The Austrian produced yet another disappointing showing, losing to a player ranked outside of the Top 200 for the third time in a few weeks. Is this a slump, or is this his new reality?

It's really tough to say because we haven't really seen anything like this in the past. We've seen players struggle before, but he's been struggling for three years now, and it's not getting any better, unfortunately.

It might just be who he is now after the injury. This performance had some good moments for the Austrian because he was up a break in both sets. Thiem took an early break in the first but also gave it back right away.

Alejandro Moro Canas, who is world no. 240 and qualified for the tournament through the qualifying draw, eventually outplayed the Austrian to take the lead 4-2, but Thiem fought back. However, down 4-5, Thiem crumbled under the pressure and lost 6-4.

The second set was another one in which Thiem took an early break, and it seemed like fans in Munich were going to get a third set. He looked comfortable on his serve, but then he simply lost it.

He lost his serve and completely shut down as Moro Canas finished it off 6-4 after Thiem crumbled under pressure once more, down 4-5. It was a rather strange sequence of events, but we've seen this before from the 2020 US Open champion.

He lost to a player ranked outside of the Top 200 a few weeks ago. He then lost once more to a player ranked outside of the Top 200, and now he has done it again. It seems like the retirement he mentioned not too long ago is certainly a topic of discussion.
