Dominic Thiem wanted to win another match at the 2024 Estoril Open, but he lost to lucky loser Richard Gasquet in two sets.
After finally winning again in an ATP Tour-level match, Thiem suffered another disappointment as the Austrian was beaten by Gasquet, who lost in the qualifying in Estoril in two sets.
Thiem was slightly favored to win in this match, because Gasquet's year hasn't been very good so far, yet the Frenchman managed to find his way to victory in a clash of two veterans.
It's just a continuation of bad results for Thiem, which the win from a few days ago only masked for a brief moment. The 2020 US Open champion didn't play as well as he needed to to win the match against Gasquet.
The first set was a bad one from Thiem, who faced all sorts of problems on his own serve while failing to really exert any pressure on Gasquet.
He didn't create a single break point in the first set, while his opponent was much more successful in this regard, and as a result, he won the first set 6-4.
The second set was similar, but Gasquet dropped his serve this time around. It came immediately after he broke Thiem in the first game of the second set, so the players traded breaks early in the second, but the score remained 1-1.
After that, fans in Estoril didn't see any more breaks, but Gasquet had chances to finish it off late in the set. Thiem held and was able to get himself to a tie-break, where the Frenchman jumped ahead early, but then his opponent turned it around.
He actually had two set points, sat 6-4, and one more on his serve, but he didn't use it. That would prove vital for the match, as Gasquet would go on to win four points in a row and finish it off, winning the tie-break 8-6 and the match 6-4, 7-6(6).
