Dominic Thiem vs Richard Gasquet: 2024 Estoril Open - Preview & Prediction

by Zachary Wimer

The second round of the 2024 Estoril Open brings a vintage clash between Dominic Thiem and Richard Gasquet.

A blast from the past will happen at the ATP 250 tournament in Estoril, as Thiem is set to battle Gasquet. The latter is one of the oldest players on the ATP Tour, and while the Austrian isn't, he's struggling with his tennis.

Thiem lost matches to players ranked outside of the Top 200, and that's not tennis he was known for, and on top of that, he's struggling with his wrist again.

Still, he did well in the first round, beating Maximilian Marterer in three sets. Gasquet, on the other hand, made it to the main draw as a lucky loser, after Alejandro Davidovich Fokina withdrew from the event.

Head-to-head:

Gasquet and Thiem played a handful of times, which isn't a surprise because they've been around for a while. They did play one match last year, which we'll take a closer look at.

It happened at the Monte-Carlo Masters, and Thiem won the match in two sets, 6-1, 6-4. This year, Thiem's form has not been stellar, and the Frenchman was playing on a steady level for the most part.

Both are really solid clay players, with Thiem's track record particularly impressive. I think clay is comfortable for him, and I think he'll score some good results on it.

347-208 Career W/L 603-394

Prediction:

I do fancy Thiem's chances here, even though I'm a bit skeptical of the wrist. He looked healthy in the first round, and Gasquet is a lucky loser, so it's not like he's in some stellar form, either. Thiem is familiar with Estoril, and I think he'll be able to use that to his advantage and win.

Prediction: Dominic Thiem to win in three sets.
