Novak Djokovic shared his opinion about a possible boycott of the 2022 Wimbledon Championships.
While it's still not clear if the Russian and Belarusian players will be able to compete at the 2022 Wimbledon Championships or if the tournament will keep the ranking points, Djokovic said that boycotting the tournament is not the best option.
Many players, including Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray, Stefanos Tsitsipas, and Alexander Zverev, expressed their disagreement with the decision of the All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) to ban Russian and Belarusian players from the 2022 Wimbledon.
This would mean that ATP Top 10 member Daniil Medvedev, WTA Top 10 member Aryna Sabalenka, and many more wouldn't be able to fight for the trophy at the only grass-court Grand Slam tournament of the season.
As the disagreement with the decision has been voiced out really loudly by some of the players, the possibility of boycotting the tournament appeared as a possible option as well.
However, in a recent interview, Djokovic said that this should not be an option, calling for a communicative approach with Wimbledon instead.
"Athletes are here to do sports. If we expel them from sports just because they come from a certain country, that is a bad decision. We need communication with Wimbledon."
Djokovic also admitted that right now, he's not involved in the political side of the sport as he used to be a decade ago, but regardless, his opinion is that boycott is an approach that is too aggressive.
"I am not involved in player politics like I was 10 years ago and I do not talk to the representatives of Wimbledon – but they told me that they are very strict. [A] boycott is a very aggressive thing – as well as that there are much better solutions."
