Jannik Sinner won't be playing any preparation events ahead of the 2024 Australian Open, and his coach, Darren Cahill, explained why.
Sinner finished the year on a very high note with the run to the ATP Finals and the Davis Cup triumph. He was technically the best player in the world in the last two months of the season, and that's a great thing ahead of the 2024 season.
Many expect Sinenr to take even bigger steps and possibly challenge for his maiden Grand Slam. Preparation has been somewhat unconventional this offseason as he's under Darren Cahill, a partnership that's been very fruitful so far.
The Australian talked to Corriere Della Sera about the offseason and why Sinner won't be playing any preparation events before the event.
The Davis Cup made the difference: 5 more matches in Malaga, the competitive season ended on 26 November. With joy, but further than we thought. We considered not stressing Jannik Sinner with a tournament before Melbourne to protect his mind and body.
Another thing that was part of Cahill's plan was for Sinner to go skiing back home. It's something he grew up with and, for a while actually competed it. He's an excellent skier and still enjoys the activity which is why Cahill advised him to do it. It's part of jest mentally resetting after a long season.
It is the strategy that, in the five years that I coached him, I used with Agassi. This way he has more margin for recovery, and skiing these days in South Tyrol, in moderation, is an integral part of the boy's well-being. Starting fresh will be crucial.
We'll see how it plays out in two weeks when the Australian Open rolls around. Sinner is expected to make a deep run, and anything but would be considered a great disappointment.
