Sinner Stops Brewing Upset From Moutet To Reach Roland Garros Quarter-Finals

by Zachary Wimer

Jannik Sinner dropped his first set at this year's Roland Garros, but he still won the match against Corentin Moutet in four sets.

His first dropped set came against the Frenchman, a tricky player with a distinct style, having a really good week on native soil. He showed all of that in the opening set of their fourth-round match, in which he thrashed the Italian.

He outplayed him in almost every rally early on, leaving the second seed confused as to what to do. Sinner kept his poker face, but it was pretty clear he was frustrated by what was happening.

He served back-to-back double faults in one of the games in which he lost his serve, which rarely happens, but it did in that first set. Moutet got up 5-0 with a set point to hand Sinner a bagel but couldn't quite get it done.

He still won the opening set 6-2, and it mostly came from the home crowd hero frustrating his opponent with his various drop shots and slices, which caused him to overhit more than once.

The Italian found a better balance in the second set as he started to be more precise with his shots. Moutet wasn't able to produce the same magic, and he started to grow more frustrated, which resulted in more mistakes.

The French player dropped that second set 3-6, then the third set 2-6 as the struggles persisted. Sinner was in rhythm and bombarding away, with Moutet's clear lack of power proving a problem.

The final set continued similarly as Moutet struggled under his opponent's tremendous pressure. The Italian added insult to injury by playing a lot of drop shots himself, which worked very well against Moutet, who generally stood far behind the line.

Overall, the Italian, who is looking very formidable this week, made a pretty good comeback, winning the match 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-1.
