Sinner Explains Why He Opted Against Surgery After Health Issue Kept Him Out Of Olympics

Jannik Sinner missed the 2024 Olympic Games due to tonsillitis, but the Italian didn't opt to remove his tonsils.

Only a few weeks ago, Andrey Rublev battled tonsillitis during the 2024 Madrid Open, which exhausted the Russian even though he won the ATP Masters 1000 event. He had multiple trips to the hospital while in Madrid and admitted to being quite overwhelmed with it, even in the weeks after it happened.

The Russian player could wrestle out of it, but then Sinner experienced the same issue, and the timing was terrible. Because of it, he missed the Olympics, even though he had tried everything to be ready to play.

After touching down in Canada, Sinner admitted to Ziggo Sports that he's fully healthy now thanks to some antibiotics, opting against the surgery because doing so would have kept him away from the courts a bit more than he would have liked at this point in the season.

He was asked whether he had ever considered possibly removing tonsils, which is a common surgery. Still, he admitted that it wasn't in consideration because it would have kept him away from the courts longer than this regular treatment, and he wasn't keen on that.

This part of the season is very busy, and the US Open is an event he doesn't want to miss so he opted for the antibiotics.

"Not removed because that would take a little bit more time to recover. Some antibiotics for six days and you know I'm happy to be healthy again. It was a tough call, tough miss for me because the Olympics were the main goal of the season. Trying to do something great for the country."

Missing the Olympics was an unfortunate development for Sinner, but he followed his fellow Italians and was happy to see them bring back two medals.

Lorenzo Musetti defeated Canada's Felix Auger-Aliassime in the bronze medal match to win the bronze medal in the singles. Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini made the final and won the gold medal for Italy in the women's doubles, and Sinner was happy to see that, even though he would have been happier to see himself get one.

"I'm also happy for Lorenzo and for the doubles. We brought home one gold and one bronze so I'm very happy for that."

The Italian's return to the tennis court already happened in Montreal. He teamed up with Jack Draper in the doubles, and they made a winning start. He won't play singles yet, as he's the top seed and has a first-round BYE.

Before playing in singles, he will return to the tennis courts for more doubles tennis with Draper. The schedule worked out well for him because he will get two double matches, making the singles return easier.
