Jannik Sinner won the 2024 US Open and dedicated his title to his aunt, who hasn't been well recently.
The Italian player added a second major title to his collection after beating Taylor Fritz in the 2024 US Open final. It was an emotional victory for Sinner because of many reasons, including his recently concluded doping saga.
The last major of the season came at the right moment for him to try to forget about that dark period, and he did by playing the best tennis out of everyone in the field to win the title.
Although the 23-year-old has dominated the 2024 season on the ATP Tour so far, it's still 'only' his second major title, and even if it was already tenth, the likes of Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal would certainly confirm that every single one is special.
Therefore, it wasn't surprising that Sinner was really happy about what he was able to achieve during the two weeks in New York, thanking the people close to him who have helped him on the rocky journey towards his second major.
"This title means so much for me. The last period of my career was really not easy. I have my team supports me every day. The people who are close to me. I love tennis. I practice a lot for these kind of stages."
The two-time major winner took time to reflect not only on his win at the US Open but also his season as a whole, which has been incredibly successful, and it all started with a title at the Australian Open.
Since then, he managed to add two ATP 500 and two ATP Masters 1000 title, but most notably, another Grand Slam title. However, like he always does, the youngster immediately reminded that there is work to be done, even despite winning.
"So many big wins for me this season. Starting with Australia and playing so well there which gave me confidence till now. The work never stops. I know I can still improve. You have to be proud of what you have. The rest, you have to go for it and work for it."
Still, even though the Italian had to go through a very difficult period in his tennis career, he realizes that here is also life away from tennis. As he revealed during the trophy ceremony, his aunt has been struggling with her health, and that's why he has decided to dedicate the title to her.
"I also realize off court there is a life. I would like to dedicate this title to my aunt, because she is really not feeling well health-wise. I don’t know how much longer I will still have her in my life."
"It’s so nice that I can share positive moments still with her. She is a very important person for my life. If that would be my one biggest wish, I wish the best health for everyone. Unfortunately, it’s not possible."
