Sinner Declares Himself 'Ready To Compete' Ahead Of Montreal Return But Remains Cautious

by Zachary Wimer

Jannik Sinner hasn't played since Wimbledon, but the Italian declared himself 'ready to compete' ahead of his return at the 2024 Canadian Open in Montreal.

Sinner has had a very interesting season so far, which opened in an incredible way with his triumph at the Australian Open. He kept a high level for the following couple of weeks, adding a win at the Miami Open, but the clay-court part of the season wasn't that great for him.

He didn't play poorly, but he didn't win any trophies either. His next trophy came in Halle, but Wimbledon wasn't that great either. He played well but then battled sickness in the match against Daniil Medvedev and some other physical problems as well.

Those problems would ultimately prevent him from playing at the Olympics, which was a tough decision for the Italian, but he's back now and ready to compete. That's according to his own words, as the Italian can't wait to get back onto the courts.

He has been in Montreal for a while, choosing to arrive early to better prepare for the ATP Masters 1000 event, where he will be favored. Not only is he the top favorite at the event, but he will contend with many players who arrived late from Paris, giving him an even greater edge. But he's still cautious because it's his first event in a while, and those rarely go smoothly.

"It feels great. I arrived here quite early. Firstly, to get rid of the jetlag. Secondly, to recover here from the last part of what I had. For sure the first couple of days were very slow days, with not a lot of practise, trying to get the body used to it again. Now I’m practising really hard again. I feel my body fighting. Honestly, it’s really good and I’m ready to compete again."

Sinner is the defending champion at the event, even though it must be noted that he didn't win the trophy on the courts in Montreal. The Canadian Open rotates host cities, so Sinner won in Toronto last year, while this year, he'll play in Montreal.

Still, it's a fairly similar event that underwent a court change in 2022, which seemingly did well for the Italian. The balls were also switched, which might have contributed to his doing better, as they now use the US Open balls.

He's played really well in New York over the years. He's expected to do well, and he certainly hopes not to disappoint, as he's quite excited to be back on the courts. Having had to watch tennis from his screen in recent weeks hasn't been very fun, and now he's ready to play it.

It's a while since the last match I played at Wimbledon. So, let's see. I'm very excited to be here and hopefully I can show some good tennis.

To ease himself into the competition, Sinner will start in the doubles with Jack Draper, who has competed in Paris. That should be a nice warm-up against Sander Gille and Joran Vliegen, an experienced doubles pairing.
