Jannik Sinner addressed his hip issue, which flared up during his previous match, after a difficult three-set match at the 2024 Madrid Open.
The Italian started to experience hip pain in the match against Pavel Kotov. He escaped that one in two sets, which was ideal as he didn't really want to push his body further, especially with the pain.
The goal was to do the same in the fourth round, but it didn't happen, as Karen Khachanov managed to produce an inspired effort and push the 22-year-old player.
He took the opening set, but Sinner fought back spectacularly to win in three sets, and he addressed the hip issue after the match.
After the third-round match, Sinner admitted that his team would try to find a solution, and seemingly, they did because he confided after his round 4 win that he wouldn't have played if it felt any worse than the day before.
"If it was worse than yesterday I would've thought about not playing today but when I have a chance, trying to get through situations early in my career, I want to give it a try. For sure I’m not physically 100% today. Tomorrow I have a day off, which can help.."
It's interesting that Sinner is choosing to play at all because the next event is the Italian Open in Rome, which is his home ATP Masters 1000 event. Missing that because of an injury would be terrible, but he's surrounded by professionals.
If he chooses to play, then there is a good chance that the injury is not too serious. He's still not 100%, though, which will impact his level, as he showed at the Monte-Carlo Masters.
He suffered a leg injury there and lost that match despite being up in the third set when it happened. The extra day of rest will help, but it's certainly a storyline to follow, especially if he advances to the final. He has two more matches before that, and neither of them will be easy.
