Sakkari Hints At Tsitsipas' Lack Of Interest In Playing Mixed Doubles At Olympics

by Zachary Wimer

Maria Sakkari played mixed doubles with Stefanos Tsitsipas at the Olympics three years ago, but it seems like they won't join forces again in Paris.

Sakkari and Tsitsipas have played mixed doubles a few times together. They played at the United Cup together and did really well. They also played at the last Olympics in Tokyo three years ago but failed to win a medal.

Both have highlighted how important representing Greece is for them, and they'll have a new chance to do so at the Olympic Games. According to many, both have high ambitions in the singles and a decent chance, but the doubles is something they will have to keep an eye on, as they are one of a few countries that has a Top 15 player on both the ATP and the WTA Tour.

Tsitsipas is reportedly keen on playing doubles with his brother Petros, especially after they lifted a trophy together last year, but also because it's their dream. Sakkari would love to play mixed doubles with Tsitsipas, but she's unsure if her compatriot would go for that, considering the heavy load it would require of him to play both singles, doubles, and mixed doubles.

Sakkari's recent discussion of it makes it seem very unlikely, which would be a shame because, as she said, they might have a decent chance together.

"I would love to play mixed doubles because i really think we have a good chance, but as far as i know he's planning on not playing mixed because he's playing doubles with his brother."

Depending on how the season progresses, he might have a chance of heart. It's still unlikely to happen because of his priorities of singles and doubles with his brother, but maybe national pride overcomes him.

As for Sakkari, she'll hope to play a great clay season because it is arguably her best surface.
