After winning his maiden ATP trophy at the Munich Open in 2022, Holger Rune is back through to the final once again.

Rune loves to play in Munich, but he’s not the only one. Botic van de Zandschulp stood against Rune in the Munich Open final last year when he was forced to retire due to breathing issues. Now, the Dutchman will have a chance to set up a rematch with the young Dane.

Rune found his place in the final thanks to a win over Christopher O’Connell, who might not sound like a dangerous player on clay, but he’s a very capable player, which he proved by stunning Alexander Zverev in Munich.

Rune was obviously highly favored due to being a player who essentially grew up on clay and proved all of his qualities by beating O’Connell quite easily. He took about 80 minutes to get it done, with the final score being 6-3, 6-2.

The first set was very interesting because, in some ways, Rune had more issues than O’Connell had. He faced four break points but saved all of them, while O’Connell faced only two but didn’t save either of those.

For Rune, it was mostly a serve split. If he hit his first serve, then he would most likely win the point. Trouble happened on the second serve, but ultimately, not enough trouble to derail the match for him.

In the second set, fans in the German city saw something similar. Once again, it was Rune who faced more break points but again saved all of them.

O’Connell faced fewer break chances but didn’t save either, which is why the Danish player was able to run away with the match. Rune will now take on the winner of the match between the second-seeded Taylor Fritz and the fourth-seeded Botic van de Zandschulp in the final.
