Andrey Rublev has a pretty interesting friendship that began three years ago in Turin as he talked about during a podcast recently.
Rublev is known as a pretty goofy person yet a serious tennis player. His off-court personality is quite outgoing and fun to be around, while his on-court demeanor can be quite intimidating and very serious.
It's a pretty interesting contrast, but you'd struggle to find a player more approachable than Rublev. One particular story from his life demonstrates that pretty well, and it shows he became friends with his bodyguard in Turin.
It happened three years ago in Turin when he played in the city for the first time. It was the ATP Finals, and he was provided security to accompany him on his journey through the city.
In a recent interview on a Russian YouTube Channel, Rublev talked about many things, including how he became friends with his bodyguard in Turin.
When I got to Turin for the first time, they assigned me a security. They assigned me a person to look after me, and turns he has to do so all day long, especially when I'm heading to practice, out on the streets. And, so we became friends, and that's it.
The host then followed up on that story by asking if it was true that he had gifted them something after that, and Rublev confirmed that he had given them an iPhone, which surprised the security person. Rublev and the bodyguard are still in touch three years later, which is pretty cool.
Yes, an iPhone. He was surprised.
So that's about all you need to know about Rublev. While he might slam the racquet on the court and crack open his knee, there is a gentle soul in there.
