Carlos Alcaraz congratulated his friend and rival Jannik Sinner after the Italian won his maiden Grand Slam title at the 2024 Australian Open.
Sinner and Alcaraz are the leading players in this new 'next-gen' on the ATP Tour. They have established themselves as the best in a line of several very solid young players, such as Holger Rune as well.
Alcaraz became a Grand Slam champion more than a year ago, and getting there included a win over Jannik Sinner. It was a brutal match that either player could have won, but Alcaraz did, and he ended up lifting the US Open trophy.
Sinner did the same on Sunday by beating Daniil Medvedev in the Australian Open final. It was a far more complicated match for the Italian than Alcaraz's US Open final, but it didn't matter in the end.
Both are Grand Slam champions now, and that's all that matters. The Spaniard wasted no time in congratulating his rival on social media as he shared a short message on X.
"I am so happy for you Jannik! 👏🏻 You deserve it more than anyone! 🏆 Enjoy the moment my friend!"
Sinner and Alcaraz contested a few matches already, with the Italian winning some while Alcaraz won the other. There is a huge respect there, and Alcaraz even called him a friend.
They even practiced together in Spain ahead of this season, so it was clearly worth it for Sinner, who has been the best player in the world in the past few months.
He finished on a very high note last year, and this title run in Melbourne is just the crowning moment. It's a perfect way to finish off some really strong months on the Tour. The future is bright as we might be getting a new rivalry.
