Novak Djokovic will play doubles at the 2022 Tel Aviv Open, partnering with his good friend and the only player he has ever won a doubles title with.
After not getting 2,000 points for winning this year's Wimbledon and not competing at the US Open, Djokovic dropped to seventh place in the latest edition of the ATP Rankings.
That may also be one of the reasons why the 21-time Grand Slam champion signed up for quite an unusual event, the 2022 Tel Aviv Open. The ATP 250 event will be held in Israel from September 26th until October 2nd, and Djokovic will compete in both singles and doubles at the event.
The Serbian will be the highest-seeded player in the singles draw and a big favorite to win the tournament. In the doubles draw, he will team up with the only player he ever lifted a doubles trophy with, Jonathan Erlich.
Back in 2010, Djokovic and Erlich teamed up at the Queen's Club and won a title after defeating Karol Beck and David Skoch in the final of the tournament. Twelve years later, they can add another title.
The reason for their partnership is the fact that the the Israeli player will end his tennis career in his home country. The 2008 Australian Open doubles champion and former doubles ATP World No. 5 player will, therefore, team up with his old friend Djokovic to enjoy his farewell at the 2022 Tel Aviv Open.
Journalist Marc Stein reported the news on Twitter, announcing that it should be Erlich's "Last Dance" in Tel Aviv.
"Novak Djokovic has confirmed he'll play doubles next week in Tel Aviv alongside Jonathan Erlich to revive the partnership that delivered Novak Djokovic's only doubles title: Queens 2010. It's being billed as the "Last Dance" for Jonathan Erlich, 45, Israel's Davis Cup playing captain."
