Nick Kyrgios is on the verge of breaking into the Top 10 of the ATP Rankings in doubles. He can do it at the 2022 ATP Finals.
The 27-year-old Australian peaked at the World No. 13 position in the singles ranking. Now, something he probably never expected to happen happened, as he surpassed his singles career high in doubles.
Ahead of the 2022 ATP Finals, Kyrgios is ranked 11th in the world in the doubles ranking, and he's very close to breaking into the Top 10. The Australian had a successful season in singles and also doubles, and thanks to winning the 2022 Australian Open alongside Thanasi Kokkinakis, they qualified for the year-end event.
The Australian duo certainly isn’t a typical doubles team that would sign up for dozens of doubles events in a season and collect points also at lower-tier events.
On the contrary, they played only a few events and succeeded at almost every tournament they signed up for, which is why they deserved their spot in Turin.
Despite a low amount of events played, Kyrgios collected enough points to be the highest-ranked Australian player in the ATP Rankings in singles and doubles, and he has a chance to break into the Top 10 of the doubles rankings at the ATP Finals.
Kyrgios was ranked 11th in the world with 3,740 points ahead of the 2022 ATP Finals. Nikola Mektic is the 10th player, and the Croatian has 4,165 points. That means that the Australian needs to advance from the round-robin stage to pass Mektic.
Kyrgios could improve by quite a lot should the Australian duo enjoy some real success at the ATP Finals. The players ranked from seventh to 10th place are very close to each other. The ninth, Austin Krajicek, has 4,205 points, the eighth, Ivan Dodig, has 4,210 points, and the seventh, Mate Pavic, has 4,370 points.
The Special K's will begin their event on Monday against Wesley Koolhof and Neil Skupski.
