After returning to clay courts after three years, Nick Kyrgios is having a great time at the 2022 Houston Open, as he already reached the semifinals of the ATP 250 tournament.
Recent doubles Australian Open champion Nick Kyrgios is enjoying the 2022 season, and it shows on the tennis court. The Australian superstar appeared on the clay court after three years, and he managed to win his first two matches at the Houston Open against American players Mackenzie McDonald and Tommy Paul.
Kyrgios, who received a wild card entry for the 2022 Houston Open, bested McDonald in three sets, after overcoming an early deficit, winning 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, but his match against the seventh-seeded Paul was much more straightforward with the Australian winning 6-4, 6-2.
In the quarterfinals, he was supposed to face Michael Mmoh, who entered the tournament as a lucky loser in place of the first-seeded. Mmoh defeated Sam Querrey in his second-round match, beating the fellow American 6-2, 6-4.
However, the 24-year-old American withdrew from the quarterfinal match against Nick Kyrgios, and therefore, the Australian advanced directly to the semifinals of the ATP 250 tournament, also referred to as the U.S. Men's Clay Court Championships.
In the semifinals, Kyrgios will face another American, already his third opponent from the host country in Houston, Reilly Opelka. The two met in Toronto last year with the taller Opelka winning the match in three sets.
This time around, Kyrgios will certainly want to write a different storyline for their match, but one thing is certain, and that's that fans can definitely expect a lot of aces as the two are also one of the leaders in this statistics at the tournament.
Neither of the players really specializes in playing on the clay courts, so their semifinal match at the 2022 Houston Open will be a clay-court showdown of two hard-court specialists.
