Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic could go toe to toe again this season with the 2023 US Open on the horizon, and John McEnroe wants the pair to meet again in the final at Flushing Meadows.
Alcaraz and Djokovic have already clashed three times this season, with the Serbian edging the world number one 2-1 on head-to-head results on the ATP Tour. Djokovic won the first meeting in the Roland Garros semi-final, and Alcaraz defeated the world number two at Wimbledon before the 23-time Grand Slam winner beat Alcaraz in the Cincinnati Masters final.
The clash of Djokovic, one of the most decorated men's players ever, and Alcaraz, the generational talent who has disrupted the natural order of the previous 'Big Three', has made for a compelling story in 2023.
When speaking to Eurosport ahead of the US Open, which begins on Monday, August 28, McEnroe echoes the thoughts of many fans and pundits that an Alcaraz-Djokovic final to cap the last Grand Slam of the year would be engrossing.
"To see the all-time great play against the young superstar is incredible. I'd love to see that match played again. The last couple of matches have all been close and incredible matches. Let's hope it lasts."
As an American native, McEnroe also shared his desire to see a home player from the US come through to challenge at Flushing Meadows. But the seven-time Grand Slam winner believes Djokvoic's exile and then return to play in the US following his unvaccinated status adds to the drama of a potential Alcarz vs. Djokovic final.
"Even though in America you want to see an American break through, everyone is saying 'oh I want to see Alcaraz play Novak' because he wasn't allowed to play. That was the first tournament in America he's played in two years in the States. The whole thing was crazy. It's a great story."
