Martin Cilic had to undergo knee surgery, which will keep him away from the tennis courts for some time.
Cilic started his 2023 season at the Tata Open in Pune after ending last year in the Top 20 for the first time since 2018. Full of optimism and confidence, the Croatian player started with a win over Roberto Carballes Baena, but he was forced to withdraw from his quarter-final match against the eventual champion, Tallon Griekspoor.
Then, he also withdrew from the first major of the season and the future of this ATP season was unsure for him. Eventually, the injury proved to be much more serious, and Cilic opted for an option that would solve it fully.
Therefore, he had to undergo knee surgery that will keep him away from the tennis courts for quite some time. The 2014 US Open announced it on social media.
"Few challenging weeks to start 2023. After consulting with various specialists, I made the difficult decision to undergo knee surgery as it seemed the best option for a long term fix to the injury. Thankfully, the procedure went as well as we could have hoped."
While having to spend time away from the tennis courts is disappointing for every tennis player, Cilic also saw the positive side of his absence from the ATP Tour. Now, he will get to spend much more time with his family, which is important to him.
"Unfortunately, this means some time away from the tennis court, but as silver lining, more precious time at home with my family. I am feeling positive and cannot wait to get back to the court, but for now big focus is on resting and the rehab journey ahead. Thank you all for the well wishes. Can't wait to see you back on Tour!"
